RD497.)US ARMY INDIAN WAR ERA M1888 ARTILLERY ENLISTED RANKS DRESS SHAKO: a spectacular piece of vintage workmanship displaying a perfect profile and shape. I don't know who made these, where they were made or during what time period but this replica dress shako is as fine as any original. Many years ago I collected these (originals) so I know them well. This is a gem quality piece. Dark blue wool body on hard body and with black ersatz leather trim around both visors, front and back. At front is a quality stamped brass American eagle plate...as fine as any original. Crown has decorative crimson horsehair plume mounted to brass post that's adorned with American eagle shield. Note that this post is mounted to star form pedestal. One of the four decorative medallions on this quatre-form pedestal is missing. You can replace it by going to any hardware store and buying a large upholstery tack (I have done this in the past with very satisfying results). Black leather chin strap snugly fitted above the front visor has has brass adjustment buckle. Fastened at sides with brass buttosn being the artillery type with crossed cannons. Has the decorative crimson braided cord adornment properly fastened at sides of helmet and with long cords and so-called 'waffles' that were fastened to artilleryman's tunic buttons (so as not loose the helmet when riding). Undersides of each visor lined with green fabric and inside of helmet has ersatz leather sweat band. EXC++++
