RD587.)SINGLE-HANDED DESTRUCTION OF A TANK BADGE: superb old copy out of a long standing collection. You'll consider this gem to be original too. It's 35x95mm in dimensions, German army field gray wool underlay. With separately applied silver metallic brocade cloth and separately applied, black-finished panzer motif which is magnetic. Has magnetic backing plate beneath the wool underlay. Does not glow under a black light. EXC++++

There are several types of fakes on these and most are pretty junky quality and readily identified as being a fake. This one however is as fine as any original.

Based on the analysis of authentic German Panzer Destruction Badges ("Panzerknacker"), the backing plate is indeed designed to be magnetic.
Key details regarding the magnetic properties and construction:
  • Magnetic Components: The badge consists of a magnetic, blackened steel tank insignia, which is secured by prongs to a metal, typically magnetic, backplate.
  • Function: The backplate is used to fix the Panzer badge securely to the woven cloth backing strip ("Litze").
  • Variations: While the tank and backplate are usually magnetic, some examples may feature a non-magnetic, aluminium, or copper-plated backing plate while the tank itself remains magnetic.
  • Condition: Authentic, "textbook" examples often feature the original, strongly magnetic backplate still in place.
These badges are generally found with a dark grey/green or black canvas/wool backing, and both the tank and the rear plate are magnetic.
