OC615.)CASED RAF BATTLE OF BRITAIN COMMEMORATIVE PRESENTATION DAGGER: superlative quality piece and the product of the premiere Wilkinson armory. This dagger was presented to RAF Battle of Britain aviation veterans. I don't know the date of this post-war presentation dagger but I'd suggest that it's circa 1965 (25th anniversary of the B of B). It's certainly old and aged and not a more recent piece as perhaps 1990 (50th anniversary). 16" long overall and being a medieval dirk design. Just radiates quality....if made more recently it would not likely show such quality of material and construction. Shows a beautiful nickel-plated steel blade etched on both sides with decorative panels. On one side is inscription 'DEDICATED TO THE ROYAL AIR FORCE VICTORS OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1940' while the reverse side is etched with 'For Outstanding Service to the RAF Benevolent Fund'. With handsome frosted gold cross-guard adorned with acanthus details; gold pommel now toned with tarnish. Smooth dark brown teak wood grip; flawless with no cracks nor any chips. Reverse ricasso is etched with British royal crest and 'By Appointment' along with maker 'Wilkinson Sword, London' as well as 'Made in England'. Comes in 5x18" hardwood case, hinged and with catch at front (missing one of the catches). On lid is frosted gold RAF wing design (with WWII King's crown). Inside is lined with sky blue satin and has cradle that holds dagger in place. Two gold coin-like medalions on the insdie lid....one with Churchill profile and the other being a Battle of Britain memorial 'Battle of Britain 1940, Their Finest Hour'. There was another plaque in place that's missing. Only glue residue remains. Note the link below to Sandhurst Military Auctioneer's website showing one of these having sold for $1,900 (South African $'s).
