G538.)1914 IRON CROSS 1st CLASS; NAME ENGRAVED: a lovely example of the '14 EKI, a wartime issued specimen. Has smooth black finished magnetic center, crisp and perfect. Genuine silver frame is darkly toned with patina. Reverse has super-wide sterling hinge, 11mm wide, and with tapered silver pin. Quality 'C' hook catch. Crisply mared at base of rear with premiere maker's mark 'KO' for the Konigliches Munzamt Orden Berlin (Royal Orders and Decorations Mint at Berlin). Impeccably jeweler engraved on the reverse with details 'Rittm.H.Ludwig' (Rittmeister or aviation flight commander and ace) along with unit (which I cannot identify) '1.CUR' and date '1915'. Note that this cross has been examined by one of the hobby's most noteworthy expert and has been deemed to be quite genuine. The engrave is OLD...note how it's tarnished in the recessed to nearly a black cast, no bright as it would be if done in modern times. Back of cross is darkly tarnished too. Gem quality specimen.
