RD764.)RD764.)IMPERIAL BAVARIAN JAGER LEATHER HELMET; RESTORED: we're told by several imperial militaria experts that this gem quality specimen is indeed an old original period shell that's been restored. It's exceptional. This is the Model 1868 Raupenhelm ('caterpillar' helmet) for light infantry, an exceptional old, restored piece of the highest quality workmanship. Original period hard black leather body showing mild wear and age, visors front and back with strong stitching. Brass chin scales at front are original period too and with intact, soft and supple black leather chin strap. Bear skin comb (raupen=caterpillar) is orignal period too. The stamped brass plate at front may be a post-period replacement -- not sure -- it's correct for this period helmet. With raised relief letter 'M' for the Bavarian king Maximilian II. On the wearer's left side is Bavarian blue/white national colors cockade; Bavarian lion rosettes are each side. With green wool (for Jager) huppe which is the decorative plume on the wearer's left side. Black leather liner is surely a post-imperial replacement. It's really good quality. Front visor is sketched with original Bavarian owner's name and the date. The rear visor is die-struck with date '1855' which I really believe is origianl to this helmet and is consistent with Maximilian's 1848-1865 reign. Fabulous restoration piece!
