RD603.)GERMAN ARMY CAVALRY OFFICER'S VISOR CAP: goldenrod yellow-piped visor cap, a splendid vintage piece of workmanship being one of LTC James Atwood's creations from back in the mid-1960's, German tailored. The workmanship and materials used with Atwood's caps is so exceptional that I still see his headgear from time-to-time being offered as genuine. All of his caps demonstrate a characteristic profile and shape --  just like a genuine period caps -- high peak. The all have a demonstrably characteristic look....very appealing. This one is tailored of a fine officer quality German army field gray wool and is piped around the crown and around the upper/lower dark green badge cloth wool with reconnaissance troops goldenrod yellow. As with many of Atwood's caps quite often the parts and components are found to be genuine period...in this case I believe that the wool is genuine period as is the stamped aluminum alloy wreath and cockade at front. So is the bullion braided chin cord. Fastened at sides with pebbled silver buttons. Cap eagle is a post-war replica. Smooth black patent leather visor with brown underside. Interior of cap is lined with brownish-tan satin like fabric and has celluloid moisture shield (like old photographic film and not the newer, soft and pliable plastic). Silver printed with premiere hat maker 'Erel' and with extra-special class tailoring 'Sonder Klasse Extra'. Genuine brown leather sweat band -- desirable coffee-with-cream shade -- and with decorative silk bow at rear seam. All stitching on sweat band and diamond strong and intact. Nothing on this cap glows under a black light. Just an exceptional Atwood cap. EXC++++

LTC James Atwood, while serving in Germany with the US Army 1967-1968, arranged to have these caps made by a number of former 3rd Rch era hat makers who often used original parts and components that Atwood had located at tailor's shops around Germany. Way back in the early 1970's I bought one of these -- as an orignal -- from a well-known Massachusetts dealer and it was in the mid-1980's that the knowledge of these began to become somewhat public.
