US731.)INDIAN WAR US ARMY M1888 ARTILLERY DRESS HELMET: as worn by enlisted ranks, full dress uniform. A really handsome period piece of headgear, shows a perfect profile and shape. Dark, dark, blue -- almost black -- woolen felt body with black leather trim around the edge. With brass spike at top adorned with American eagle profile, pedestal base showing acorns and oak leaves. Red horse hair plume. At front is stamped brass American eagle plate -- original to this helmet -- showing crossed cannon for artillery troops. Black patent leather band around the front and rear with artillery side buttons. Complete with its original period artillery-red braided cord adornments complete with waffles and loops. Note that this long cord was fastened to one of the buttons on the tunic. This would ensure the artilleryman not loosing the helmet should it fall off. Remember...in 1888 US field artillery was still horse drawn. Interior has brown leather sweat band, soft and supple and intact. Stitching is strong too. No mothing to woolen felt body. Lovely period helmet in a great state of preservation. EXC++++
