US462.)CONFEDERATE STATES 1864 $20 NOTE: shows light evidence of circulation. This is the Confederate type 67 $20 note according to the Criswell numbering system (each CSA paper note has an identifying number). Engraved on fine banknote paper with central vignette being the Tennessee state capitol building in Nashville. In lower right corner is cameo portrait of CSA Vice President Alexander Stephens. Hand inscribed serial number on note '94173' with letter 'B' showing the plate position of this note on each printed sheet of ten (before being hand cut into individual notes)...so technically this note's number is '94173B'. Printed with anti-counterfeiting lace pattern background, elaborate printing on the reverse too to discourage counterfeiters. Printed too with 'The Confederate States of America, Will Pay TWENTY DOLLARS to Bearer' and issued at 'Richmond, Virginia February 17th, 1864'. Printed also with this note's plate maker 'Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, SC'. Signed in ink too by proxies for the Confederate registrar and the treasurer too.
1864 was the last year that the Confederacy printed any banknotes and by then CSA paper money had a really diminished transactional value. So it's not uncommon to find these in such a good state of preservation. There are stories of hundreds of CSA notes having been released to the public out of southern banks that had been holding them in their vaults up into the 1930's.
The type 67 $20 CSA note is typically selling for around $95 is this superb state of preservation. What is particularly desirable about this particular note is its deep red shade which indicates that it was an early printing. Later-printed notes -- and are much more common -- have light pink cast. This is due to the ink having been diluted over the printing run. Printing inks were very scarce in the late wartime Confederacy.
