US729.)WWII US NAVY TELESCOPE: used on the bridge on capital ships. 24" long black crinkle finish (as commonly found on military binoculars). Clear, super-powerful optics showing a bit of scattered blemishing when viewing. Frame is marked with 'U.S.NAVY BU SHIPS OOD N.G.F.TYPE' (which translates to=Bureau of Ships -- the US Navy unit that oversaw equipment distribution -- and OOD='Officer of the Deck' being the senior watch....the NGF is for the Washington DC based facility 'Naval Gun Factory'). Also marked with this particular optical instrument's designation '10X Mark II Mod. 2. Dated '1942' and with optical maker 'Wollensak, Rochester, NY'. Comes in its original wooden case with brass hinges. Interior of case has felt-lined cradle that holds telescope in place. One of the wooden cradles was broken and I was able to glue it together again with wood adhesive. Best to take care with it though so that it doesn't break again. EXC++++
- O.O.D. (Officer of the Deck): This indicates the optic was designed for use by the Officer of the Deck (or Officer of the Deck, Underway), who is the senior watch stander responsible for the navigation, safety, and operation of the ship. These were often used for identifying ships, spotting, and general surveillance from the bridge.
- N.G.F. (Naval Gun Factory): This is the manufacturing facility, located in Washington, D.C., which was a primary producer of high-quality optics and navigation equipment for the U.S. Navy before and during World War II.
