US1108.)WWII USN ENLISTED PILOT'S SLEEVE RATING: genuine WWII period example, very desirable to say the least. Rank is CPO naval aviator. With separately applied navy blue chevrons on white twill underlay. Machine embroidered naval aviator's wing motif in center. Edges folded over on the back and machine embroidered with the date '1943' (always nice to see). Does not glow under a black light. Enlisted NAP's flew the entire WWII USN aircraft inventory: F4F Wildcasts, F6F Hellcats, Corsaisrs, Dauntless dive-bombers and Avengers. Clean, EXC++++
During World War II, Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Naval Aviators—commonly known as "NAP" (Naval Aviation Pilot) or enlisted pilots—flew virtually the same front-line combat and support aircraft as commissioned officers, spanning fighters, dive bombers, torpedo bombers, patrol planes, and transports.
While the Navy gradually phased out training new enlisted pilots during the war (converting many to warrant or commissioned officers), those who remained in the cockpit as CPOs or Master Tech Sergeants in the Marines flew major fleet aircraft across all theaters.
