RD681.)ALLGEMEINE-SS ENLISTED RANKS VISOR CAP: spectacular old copy, surely one of James Atwood's circa 1968 caps. Shows a perfect profile and shape, high peak. Tailored of a quality black herring-bone-twill wool and piped around the crown with white wool; piped too around the upper/lower black wool cap band. Cap's wool fabric appears to be genuine period as is often the case with many of Atwood's caps. He ran around Germany in the mid-1960's and bought up old inventory of cap components left over in dozens and dozens of former 3rd Rch era tailors. With smooth black patent leather visor having the correct checkered underside. Black leather chin strap (appears to be genuine period) fastened at sides with smooth black enamel-finished buttons. At front are stamped silver alloy cap eagle and totenkopf skull device...these are aged and worn and look very much like they're original period. Hard to say for sure. Couple of moth nips to the piping, not detracting and just add to the aged and salty charm of this dangerous old cap. Gray leather sweat band with white silk decorative bow at rear seam. Leather sweat band is soft and supple and stitching is strong and intact. Missing the sweat diamond but you can see that the lining beneath was marked with that characteristic SS runes. Lining is stained and soiled from use. Inked with fantasy American GI's name and his serial number. With oil cloth RZM tag sewn on the inside of the lining beneath the sweat band. EXC++++

This cap recently came out of a mature Mid-West collection. It was bought years ago as an original piece of headgear and when you examine you'll see why....it's an outstanding old Atwood cap.
