RD669.)VINTAGE HITLER WATERCOLOR IN FRAME: a really, really old counterfeit being one of AH's wartime watercolors done in France circa 1916-17. This is a real watercolor, not a print, and very convincingly mimics Hitler's crude style of the period. Scene shows a war-damaged French town with roofless homes and church tower. Matted under class. 8x10" gold finished wooden frame is really old as is the beveled mat board. Note too that this watercolor is signed with 'A.Hitler' in the style common to his work of this period. Backing board and frame too are really old and genuinely aged. So unbelievably convincing....could be sold as genuine there is no doubt. Originally came from a very well-known 3rd Rch photos, autographs and documents dealer who indeed sold it as an old counterfeit. EXC+++
Interesting note to point out: when Hitler was elected to the position of Reichskanler in 1933 he ordered the SS-SD art and cultural agents to go out into Germany and collect all of Hitler's artwork that they could locate. He was embarrassed by pre-1933 art critics and their negative comments about his works. Furthermore, the SS-SD considered his large volume of artistic works to be national treasures of a sort. Anyway, once the SS-SD has accumulated much of his supposed works they found that a lot of the artwork retrieved were counterfeits. So, clearly the fakers were at work way back in 1933. This could indeed be one of those counterfeits, it's that old.
